A transport planning board should reduce decisions the planner has to hold in their head. Moving a card is easy; understanding the job, finding the right resources and preventing an impossible assignment is the real work.

The card must show enough, not everything

At a glance, the planner needs the job reference, customer, route, start time, driver, vehicle and assignment state. Full stops and operational details should remain one click away without overcrowding every column.

Test narrow screens and days with many jobs. Truncated information should have a predictable details view rather than forcing staff to guess.

Assignment must be faster than correction

Searchable drivers, vehicles and trailers reduce long dropdowns. Dragging a resource onto a job can remove an extra confirmation step, but the save must be clear and the resulting assignment visible.

Conflict logic should consider overlapping operational windows, not only identical start times. The planner also needs to know which resource conflicts and with which job.

Journeys and Fast Jobs need different detail

A Fast Job can be a single collection or delivery. A Journey may contain multiple ordered stops, different evidence and a longer operational window. The board should keep both understandable without pretending they are identical.

Test moving, assigning and opening both job types. Make sure a Journey retains its stop sequence and that resource availability reflects the work period.

Does drag-and-drop make a board good? No. It is useful interaction, but readable context, conflict handling and reliable persistence matter more.

Should all job details appear on the card? No. Show the planning minimum and provide a fast detail view for the full route, stops and evidence.

Can a board replace route optimisation? Not unless the product explicitly calculates and optimises routes. A visual schedule and an optimisation engine are different tools.
