HGV Brake Test Reports: How to Read Imbalance, Efficiency and Warning Signs
A printed pass can still contain warning signs. Learn how to interpret HGV brake efficiency, imbalance, axle results and changes over time.
The most useful part of a brake test report is not the word “pass”. It is the pattern underneath: which axle produced the force, whether paired wheels behaved consistently, how the service, secondary and parking systems performed and whether the result has deteriorated since the previous test.
This guide starts after the test has been carried out. For deciding when to use a laden roller test, risk-assessed alternative or EBPMS, read HGV brake performance assessments.
Start with test identity and conditions
Before interpreting numbers, confirm:
- vehicle or trailer identity;
- test date and inspection or annual-test link;
- test station and equipment;
- presented and design weights;
- laden or unladen condition;
- axle count and configuration;
- whether wheels locked during the test;
- system tested: service, secondary or parking;
- any machine comments, warnings or test limitations.
A report for the wrong trailer or an unexplained very light test condition cannot support the maintenance decision simply because it looks formal.
What brake efficiency means
Brake efficiency expresses achieved braking force relative to the relevant vehicle or axle weight. The report compares measured performance with the standard applicable to that vehicle, system and test.
Do not memorise one universal percentage. Required values vary by vehicle type, age, system and test context, and the current DVSA report guide or inspection manual should be used. The printout normally shows the achieved result and required standard.
A pass just above the threshold deserves more attention than a strong, stable result—especially if the same asset previously achieved more under comparable load. Efficiency can also look unrepresentative when wheels lock early on an unladen test. Read the notes and lock indicators rather than treating the percentage alone as absolute.
Service, secondary and parking brakes
Service brake
The service brake is the normal foot-brake system. Review total efficiency and each axle’s contribution. One strong axle can mask a weak wheel or axle in the overall figure, so do not stop at the total.
Secondary brake
The secondary system provides braking if part of the service system fails. Depending on design, it may use parts of the service system. Confirm which axles or wheels the report attributes to it and whether the required standard is met.
Parking brake
The parking brake must hold the vehicle when stationary. Its measured efficiency is separate from service performance. Low or inconsistent effort may point towards adjustment, actuator, linkage or foundation-brake issues that need competent inspection.
These descriptions explain the report; they do not diagnose a repair. A qualified technician should investigate components and confirm roadworthiness.
Read axle results, not only totals
Work from axle one through the combination:
- Compare left and right braking force on the same axle.
- Note wheel locks, fluctuations and warnings.
- Compare axle contribution with expected load and system design.
- Look for an axle contributing markedly less than comparable earlier tests.
- Check whether a repaired axle improved on retest.
For trailers, confirm the test reflects the trailer’s own presented weight and brake system. If the report covers a combination, make sure results can be attributed correctly.
What imbalance means
Imbalance describes the difference in braking force between wheels on the same axle, generally expressed relative to the higher force. A large difference can pull the vehicle under braking and may indicate adjustment, contamination, wear, actuator, pressure or mechanical problems.
Use the threshold printed for the applicable test and current DVSA guidance. Even when the result remains within the pass limit, investigate a rising trend or a sudden difference from previous reports.

The purpose of the trend is not to calculate a diagnosis from the office. It is to ask the workshop the right question before a marginal result becomes a failure.
Lock values and unladen tests
When a lightly loaded wheel locks on the rollers, the tester may be unable to develop its maximum braking force. A lock can support a pass calculation in some circumstances, but it may make the measured force less useful for comparing absolute performance.
That is one reason DVSA identifies laden testing as best practice. On an unladen report, note which wheels locked, presented axle weights and whether the competent person considers the evidence meaningful. Do not celebrate a high-looking result without understanding how it was obtained.
Warning and advisory indicators
Investigate:
- a failed efficiency or imbalance item;
- a result only marginally above the standard;
- one wheel or axle producing much less force;
- excessive fluctuation or machine warning;
- wheels that did not lock where comparable wheels did;
- repeated adjustment before each pass;
- a material fall from the last comparable test;
- service performance that is acceptable while secondary or parking performance is weak;
- different results before and after maintenance with no explanation;
- missing presented weight or incorrect vehicle details.
The DVSA report guide explains that a pass can still show areas needing further investigation. “Passed” is a regulatory outcome for that test, not a maintenance instruction to ignore all advisory evidence.
Turn the report into a maintenance decision
Use a controlled sequence:
- Competent person evaluates the complete printout.
- Findings are compared with prior reports and recent defects.
- Weak or abnormal results receive a component inspection.
- Repairs and adjustments are recorded against the finding.
- A retest or other suitable verification confirms performance where necessary.
- The person authorised by the maintenance system signs the roadworthy release.
- The report, repair and verification remain attached to the safety inspection.
Do not accept “adjusted brakes” without identifying what was found, what changed and how the result was verified.
Trend the right information
Maintain a simple history by asset:
- date and test condition;
- presented weight;
- total service, secondary and parking efficiency;
- axle imbalances;
- wheel-lock and warning notes;
- defects and repairs;
- retest outcome.
Compare like with like. A laden annual test and a very light interim test are not directly equivalent. The trend should explain test conditions rather than producing a misleading league table.
Digital maintenance records can place reports side by side and flag deterioration. They cannot determine the cause of an imbalance or authorise release.
